Book Review of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Tuesdays with Morrie: Personal Change and Lifes Great Lessons Stephen Covey talks about seven habits that one can practice in order to achieve both personal and professional success in The 7Habits of Highly Effective People (1989). He defines these habits as the intersection of knowledge, skill and desire. Covey sees the development of these habits as part of an entities progress on a maturity continuum from dependence to independence to interdependence (Covey, p. 49). As a part of this journey Covey asserts that there are principles that govern human effectiveness, natural laws that cannot be broken. One of these principles is that one must grow and change, not only physically, but emotionally, in relationships, and in character. Covey also points out that many times the way we see the problem is the problem (p. 40). Often one is looking externally for solutions that can only be found within. The seven habits Covey advances are designed to affect a principle centered, character based, inside out approach to personal and interpersonal effective ness. Mitch Albom, in his book Tuesdays With Morrie (1997) explores some of these same issues of personal growth in the context of lessons learned from conversations with his favorite college professor, Morrie Schwartz, who is terminally ill, afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscleShow MoreRelated7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Book Review)4230 Words   |  17 PagesHabit 1: Be Proactive According to Stephen Covey, the unique trait that we, people, are separated from animals is the ability to think about our very thought process or what we call, â€Å"self-awareness†.
